Agropoli

Located about 60km from the town of Salerno, Agropoli is one of the most important centers of the coastal province of Salerno, with a population of about twenty thousand inhabitants.


Located on the Cilento Coast, near West National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano, on the Tyrrhenian Sea at the southern Gulf of Salerno and south of Piana del Sele, now lives in economic activity from tourism, while that in the past role it was for the fishing and agriculture.


HISTORY
In antiquity at the mouth of the river testen opened a sheltered natural bay, now almost entirely silt, used by the Greeks Poseidonia close (the current Paestum) for trades with local populations, while in Roman times, developed a village called sea "Ercula" that flourished between the first century BC and fifth centuries D.C.

In the sixth century the Byzantines fortified the promontory giving it the name of "Akropolis" meaning "city set up". The city remained in the hands of the Byzantines all'882 up when he fell into the power of Saracens that occupied by about 882 to 915.

The feud Agropoli Norman returned in time under the jurisdiction of bishops, who at that time had established their headquarters in Capaccio, who owned except for short periods until the early decades of the fifteenth century when it was given by Pope Gregory XII to the king Ladislaus of Durres (1386-1414).

In 1436 the King Alfonso V of Aragon granted the fiefdoms of Agropoli and Castellabate to John Sanseverino count of Marsico and Baron of Cilento.
Agropoli subsequently passed to D'Ayerbe d'Aragona (1553), the Grimaldi (after 1564), to Arcella Caracciolo (1597), in Mendoza (1607), the principles of Filomarino Roccadaspide (1626), to Mastrillo (1650) and temporarily to Zattara.

In 1660, the feud is purchased by the Dukes of Sanfelice that held until the end of feudality (1806).

The old town of Agropoli still retains much of the circuit of defensive walls with seventeenth-century portal of entry. TOURISM

Trademark Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) and Typical Geographic Indication (IGT) of locally produced wine is added to the production of extra virgin olive oil Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and liquor of various kinds.

A typical dish of Agropoli are anchovies that are using many traditional recipes: "mbuttunate", "arreganate, marinated or salted."

As for other products typical of the area, in addition to the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP, with mozzarella vaccination "co 'on mortedda" to cacioricotta goat Cilento and "caciocavallo" typical examples are honey, artichoke round Paestum Protected Geographical Indication (IGP), the chickpea Cicerale of the bean Controne, the fig White Cilento; also renowned production of sweet figs and chocolate figs.
Among the meats deserve mention bacon or "Longarella" and "soppressata" of Gioi, between species of fish anchovies "menaica."
