Discovery Services > Info Point > Amalfi Coast

The origin is uncertain: the majority of scholars favors the Latin adjective ater, dark, dreary, why would correspond to the vision of the village like a cavern enclosed by steep cliffs overlooking the sea.

Others are derived from the name after which came the first Greek settlers, Atria.

The beauty of Atrani lies in choreography that draws around the beach and nell'intrico homes, put one on, that makes it resemble a crib, especially at night when the lights are lit.

By day, the streets that cross sometimes seem to disappear into the houses and then re-emergence of magic in a slargo, a small square, where the sunlight is finally free to spread.

Atrani, very close to Amalfi, is the best coastal village has retained its original structure dates back to medieval times, made up of alleys, archways, courtyards, squares and the "stairs".

It has a small beach and protected from harvest in the evening, leaving the lamps for fishing. At night, the thousand points of light lamps in the sea are the most beautiful vision that we can have the Mediterranean.

In a place so small there are many things to see. Why Atrani, while the maritime republics, was inhabited by the most noble families of Amalfi. And here the Doges were crowned and buried.

The visit to the village should begin at the church of San Salvatore de Birecto, where was the coronation of the highest government authorities, which was solemnly placed his cap on the head ( "Birecto") Dogali.

Restructured in neoclassical style, the church is really old. Founded in fact 940, contains a marble pluteus end of the century showing dell'XI high of Byzantine style and anthropomorphic figures derived Lombard. The beautiful bronze door merge was made in Constantinople in 1087 by the noble Viaretta Pantaleone, the same as two decades earlier had brought to Amalfi the door of the cathedral. The two ports are very similar and that of Atrani has two formats flying from 24 panels, with four power-rich inlaid in silver, copper and enamel, executed with technical eastern (Persian-Syrian).

On the slopes of the mountain instead has set the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maddalena, built in the thirteenth century as the atranesi thanks to Madonna for having liberated by Saracen raiders. consists of a single rectangular covered by a barrel vault and lighted by two windows of the Baroque facade. In the small sacristy is preserved Roman cineraria an urn of white marble. The majolica dome and bell tower to square became a symbol of the skyline of Atrani.

Next to the church is the Grotto of Masaniello, below which is the maternal home of the famous Neapolitan capopopolo, built on top of 500 steps.

Just over of public roads linking Atrani with Amalfi is the Grotto of the Saints. This is probably a part of the Benedictine monastery of Sts. Quirico and Juliet founded in 986 by the future Archbishop Leo I. The entrance to the small cave, which opens onto a terrace cultivated a lemon, is surrounded by one of the arches supporting a water channel. The cave has a perimeter of an irregular quadrilateral and walls decorated with Byzantine-style frescoes, dating from the twelfth century and depicting the four evangelists. On a green background stands a holy warrior, certainly San Giorgio, with his arm raised to hold the auction.
