Park Mercatello was inaugurated on February 6 1998 to present Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, then President of the Republic.
With its 10 hectares of extension is one of the largest urban parks in Italy, in relation to the number of residents. THE COLLECTION ACQUAVIVA:
The collection of cactacee and succulent family Acquaviva was acquired by the city of Salerno in 1998. The fruit of years of real dedication and passion of Dr. Osvaldo Acquaviva, the collection is today the capital city of Salerno. The municipal administration in order to protect and enhance the valuable collection, has created a greenhouse inside the park Mercatello: the ideal setting from an aesthetic point of view, the optimum setting from a botanist. For the homeless and to the maintenance of species are needed more than 6 months of work they have seen the preparation of background substrate cultivation, positioning of essences, several pesticide treatments, and weed that pesticides. A collection of major importance, in terms of quality and quantity of species, some of which are a rare honor for comparison. The City of Salerno has incorporated the already diverse collection Acquaviva with other species. The greenhouse was appropriately surrounded by flower beds, which are also enriched by cactuses which Agavi, Euphorbia, Echinocactus, Crassula, Chamaecereus, etc.. introducing visitors to the different subspecies and any extraordinary and incomparable kept inside the greenhouse. The greenhouse of Mercatello Park is now among the most valuable and rich southern Italy: a point of reference for scholars and lovers of botany, a must for tourists, an oasis of pleasant break for citizens . The cataloging of species and timely information, combined with constant vigilance and care, help to maintain a high level of attention that is widely acknowledged to the greenhouse Park Mercatello.
