The old town of Salerno is located in the town closest to the Amalfi coast. In the pre-Roman era came to coast to the church of SS. Annunziata where there was the mouth of the creek Fusandola. A few hundred meters east from the first beach (which was tied to the plain of Sele) began to climb Cava dei Tirreni, where the ancient Romans founded with his Salernum Forum in 197 BC
Around the Roman town was developed during the Middle Ages the Lombards of Salerno, which was extended increasingly to the river Irno, and that under the rule of Sanseverino extended until the "Portanova" door still exists.
I RION
There was a system of walls that surround the winds "Rioni" of the Historic Center of Salerno, centered around the cathedral: Fornelli, Fusandola, Campo, Madonna delle Grazie, Barbati, Canalone, Duomo, San Giovanniello, San Benedetto, Porto, city hall, Old Court, St Augustine, Piantanova, Maimed-Forts, St. Anthony, Sant'Eremita, Portarotese, Arce and Portanova.
It is considered that the approximate limits of the old town are the torrent Fusandola (where there was the so-called "Portacatena"), the beach, the hill to the castle of Arechi (called "Mount Bonadies") and old climb of Mount Caramel (near " Portanova ").
The old town of Salerno is one of the best preserved and restored of the Italian peninsula. The poet Alfonso Gatto called the medieval jewel, for his enormous wealth of palaces and churches of the Lombard and Norman.
In its geographical center will raise the Duomo, rich not only art but also of history. In its crypt are the remains of one of the twelve apostles of Christ, St. Matthew. Near the cathedral are the provincial archaeological museum, the provincial art gallery, museum and the Diocesan Museum Educational Medical School Salernitana.
The entire old town is crossed by Via dei Mercanti, still one of the hubs of trade and "shopping" of Salerno and its surroundings.
