Sapri is situated at the southern Campania, a few km from Basilicata, in the Tyrrhenian Sea, on a small coastal plain that overlooks the Bay of Sapri, in the Gulf of Policastro terminating the south coast Cilento, and is surrounded by a semicircle Apennines mountains that rise behind it.
The city has origins in Sapri very old and is considered the heart of the Gulf of Policastro, once called "Sinus Laus." In Roman times the bay and its hinterland were held in high regard; visited by Cicero called the "gem parva maris hell" (small gem of the Sea of the South) praised and admired by many travelers of the eighteenth and 'that eight hundred appreciated the well-being. But Sapri is known for the tragic expedition Carlo Pisacane, 2 July 1857, mentioned in verse from the famous poem "the edge of Sapri" by Luigi Mercantini. Although the intent of the Left failed to Pisacane , At least away forever the danger of establishing a United Muratti in southern Italy and opened the way for the dispatch of a Thousand. The tragic enterprise is commemorated by an obelisk erected in the first centenary of a Largo Three hundred and a very impressive statue that depicts sea bass lies on the reef Scialandro, while looking toward the bay where the three hundred Sapri landed. Every summer, the expedition is remembered by a commemoration in costume landing.
TOURISM
Today Sapri is a town in predominantly tourist vocation. It can boast of being, a good title, one of the most famous tourist centers and well-attended Cilento and of Campania. It boasts of more than a decade the framework "BLUE FLAG FEE" and in 2007 won third place in Campania (27mo in Italy) in the ranking by Legambiente in the "Blue Guide" (getting a 4-Sail) at Pollica and Positano, as well as other prestigious awards, such as reporting to 12mo place among the best seaside resorts in Italy, in the special ranking by the weekly "People".
ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES
Settlements have been found in several sites in the territory adjacent to housing saprese, particularly in the locality to locality and carnal Viole. We do not have, then, traces of buildings or sites of particular importance to the Roman Empire at that, when built an impressive villa at sea, equipped with landing, spas, theater and mosaics of high artistic quality (those observed before their destruction). The building remained on track a wide area in loc. Cammarelle (the name taken from warehouses of the villa, adjacent to the port Roman). At the beginning of last century was active in the area a "CARCARA", used for the production of lime. This presence can suggest that a work of "laudable" recycling, the imposing structures of the villa was used as quarry stone and reduced to lime. The only consolation to the loss of this historic residence, may be determined by the poetic awareness that many buildings have Sapri, perhaps, in their walls, the Roman villa and its history.
TURISMO
