The Cathedral of St. Matthew, founded by Robert Guiscard, was inaugurated in March 1084 and consecrated directly by Pope Gregory VII.
The current issue is the restructuring occurred after the earthquake of 5 June 1688; entry was changed and the atrium is surrounded by a portico of 28 straight columns of votes with arches, the sides enriched by a series of Roman sarcophagi.

In the nave you can see the famous amboni the last decades of the XII century decorated with sculptures and mosaics. Cappella del Tesoro in you can admire several gothic shrines including the arm of S. Matthew and the statues of S.S. Salernitana martyrs.
In the lower level, in correspondence dell'altare Central, there is the crypt consists of a salt environment with nine files of three spans with cross vault, is based on columns.
XVII in the crypt was restored by Domenico Fontana who conceived the turn in octagonal boxes that alternate with those circulars delimited stucco and paintings.
