The construction of the Teatro Municipal Giuseppe Verdi was deliberated by the City Council of Salerno on December 15 1863, on a proposal by the then Mayor Matthew Luciani.
The design and direction of the work was entrusted to architects Antonio and Giuseppe D'Amora Mannequins that based on measurements and proportions of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. The work of decoration were instead directed by Gaetano D'Agostino, a painter of great honor that was made by the signatures alongside the world's most prestigious artistic partenopeo.
The theater was inaugurated on April 15 1872 with the representation of Rigoletto, Mar. 27 1901 Theater was named after Giuseppe Verdi, died on the first January of that year.

Rendered unusable by the earthquake of 1980, the theater remained closed for almost 14 years. It was renovated and reinaugurato July 6 1994, during celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Salerno Capital.
The restoration brought to light historical and artistic details that make it even more valuable Theater, one of the few in Italy, nineteenth and perfectly preserved wooden structure.
On 22 January 1997 the staging of Verdi's Falstaff, played by baritone Rolando Panerai, inaugurates the first season of the recent history of the theater, strongly desired by Vincenzo De Luca, Mayor then as now, and the Artistic Director of Currently, Janos Acs. The event is also linked to the foundation Coro del Teatro Lirico.

In the first season will follow every other year, 10 years of music, uninterrupted, with broad consensus and public criticism. The Theater hosts today, in addition to the season, the ballet and concerts, theatrical seasons, exhibitions, concerts, events for young people, laboratories, research seasons. Thousands of students have been able to know and appreciate, thanks to guided tours in the program.
The sensitivity of City has meant that the city finally found a temple of music and culture, a culmination of a historic journey with the music, comes this year, during the decade, the appointment of an artistic director the likes of Daniel Oren, who gives the Verdi opera theater proper international.
