Discovery Services > Info Point > Valle del Sele

The origins of this center are lost in the maze of the prehistoric: obvious, in fact, are the traces of phenomena linked to a culture defined settlement, which stands at the foot of Mount Valva.

Again, as in previous settlements of the territory, some archaeological traces are to assume that in reality it was scattered villages, black ceramic paint is a witness to a culture that is around the second half of the fourth century BC

In Roman times, the territory was crossed by a highway connecting comps-Volcej, who also put in communication areas Adriatic Sea; Valva though small, had a significant role for the position equidistant between the two cities.

The inexorable fall of the Empire and the ensuing political and economic crisis, involving considerable disadvantages for the local population, causing a retreat of settlements at the foot of the mountain: in fact, the numerous shelters in caves exerted a strong attraction. In later times, these grounds were added even religious; in the Middle Ages, the whole mountain area is characterized as sacred; still of fundamental importance for the community, is the sanctuary rock micaela.

In the Norman Valva is home to a priory of the great abbey of San Benedetto di Salerno, under the title of San Bartolomeo.
The Normans were established in early XI century, at the foot of Mount Marzano, building their military and civilian settlements. Robert Guiscard gave the feud with its leader Gozzolino; these discenderebbe perhaps the family Valva, who built the various fortifications.

The offspring of Valva took the dress of the Sovereign Order of the Knights of Malta in'600 with Ottavio Valva, the last descendant of the family was Maria Joseph, who conceived and began the construction of the Park and Villa towards the end of'700; died in 1831 without heirs.

Thus all that he had passed to the family of Ayala, of Spanish origin, but linked to Valva for bonds noble marriage, the marquis Francesco Saverio d'Ayala completed the construction of the work.

With the death in 1959, the last of Ayala, the villa was given the Order of Malta, which still belongs.

Since then, who could not distinguish, especially during the Roman period.

Always sacred place, as the sanctuary rock micaela today weaves its culture with that of the mythical Knights of Malta, which belongs to the Villa for a family Valva supplemented by that of Ayala.
